Choose the task before the difficulty
Addition and subtraction develop number and place-value strategies. Multiplication and division connect equal groups. Long division gives a written workspace for larger dividends. Equivalent fractions asks for one missing number; simplifying fractions asks for the whole fraction in lowest terms.
Start short, then adjust
Try a few questions and ask the learner how they approached them. Presets are starting points, not curriculum or grade labels. All first-release questions use nonnegative whole numbers or positive proper fractions. Repeated questions may occur in small ranges.
