A LITTLE GUIDANCE

Practise decimal with purpose

Learners should understand whole-number addition and subtraction and the meaning of tenths and hundredths. Connect 0.1 to one of ten equal parts before introducing a written decimal method.

A sensible next step

  1. Choose addition, subtraction or an alternating mix. Subtraction operands are ordered so results stay nonnegative.
  2. Set one, two or three decimal places. The range fields are whole-number limits: 0 to 10 includes decimal values from 0.00 through 10.00 at two places.
  3. Choose a short sheet, generate the preview and download the question PDF. Download the matching answer key separately; both files carry the same worksheet ID.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: 4.70 − 2.85

Align the decimal points. Exchange one tenth for ten hundredths: subtract 5 hundredths from 10 to leave 5. Exchange one whole for ten tenths, giving 16 tenths; subtract 8 to leave 8. Finally 3 wholes minus 2 leaves 1. The answer is 1.85. Check 1.85 + 2.85 = 4.70.

Watch for this

Aligning the last written digits instead of decimal points can mix tenths with hundredths. Write trailing zeros when they clarify the columns: 2.5 and 2.50 have the same value. These sheets show a consistent selected precision.

Connect the notation to a model

At two decimal places, think in hundredths. For 0.35 + 0.48, combine 35 hundredths with 48 hundredths to get 83 hundredths, or 0.83. For 0.65 + 0.75, 140 hundredths regroup into one whole and 40 hundredths: 1.40. Discuss this exchange before increasing the range.

Check by reversing the operation

For addition, subtract one addend from the total to recover the other. For subtraction, add the difference to the smaller operand to recover the larger. The site independently checks this relationship before showing or downloading a sheet. The answer key gives final answers; it does not replace discussion of each written step.

How these settings work

Addition and nonnegative subtraction only; decimal multiplication, division, negative answers and rounding are not generated here. Inputs are bounded whole-number limits up to 9999. Answers retain the selected decimal places, and addition totals may exceed the upper operand limit. Exact scaled-integer arithmetic avoids rounding drift.

Generated answers are checked separately against mathematical relationships before the sheet is displayed. Select settings using your knowledge of the learner; these resources are not curriculum-certified.
