A LITTLE GUIDANCE

Practise simplifying fractions with purpose

Learners should know equivalent fractions and common factors. They need to divide the numerator and denominator by the same factor without changing the represented share.

A sensible next step

  1. The generator chooses a proper base fraction and multiplies both parts by a factor of at least 2. The printed fraction is therefore reducible.
  2. Find a common factor, divide both parts by it and repeat if needed. Alternatively, divide by the greatest common factor in one step.
  3. Check the result by cross multiplication and confirm the numerator and denominator share no factor greater than 1.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: simplify 18/24

Both 18 and 24 are divisible by 6. Divide both by 6 to get 3/4. The numbers 3 and 4 share no factor greater than 1, so 3/4 is the simplest form.

Watch for this

Stopping at 9/12 preserves the value but leaves a common factor of 3. Ask “Can I divide both numbers by another whole number greater than 1?”

Try a five-minute lesson

Begin with base denominators 2 to 6 and a largest scale factor of 3. List factor pairs for the numerator and denominator of one printed fraction. For 8/12, both share 2 and 4. Dividing by 4 gives 2/3 directly; dividing by 2 twice reaches the same result.

Respond to the method

Use two questions when checking an answer: does it keep the value, and is it fully simplified? For 12/18, 4/6 passes the value check because 12 × 6 = 18 × 4, but it still has a common factor of 2. The final answer is 2/3. Do not increase both the denominator range and scale factor at once; printed values can grow quickly.

How these settings work

The base-denominator range is applied before scaling. Printed denominators can be larger. The answer key uses simplest proper fractions, not mixed numbers or decimals.

Generated answers are checked separately against mathematical relationships before the sheet is displayed. Select settings using your knowledge of the learner; these resources are not curriculum-certified.
